Cute pooch Cosmo has been voted Parliament’s top dog.

The eight-month-old wire-haired fox terrier pup, who belongs to Dewsbury Tory MP Simon Reevell, won an online poll in the annual Westminster Dog of the Year competition.

The contest, run by the Kennel Club and the Dogs Trust, pits MPs of all parties against each other.

Cosmo came out a clear winner beating 21 other hounds in the “paw-blic vote”. MPs campaigned hard on social media.

The aim of the competition was to promote the importance of training and education and encourage responsible dog ownership.

Simon said he wanted to thank all those who voted and added: “This is a great result for Cosmo and for the cause of responsible dog ownership.

“I am pleased that taking part in this competition has allowed me to get that important message across to more than 200,000 people.”

Simon and Cosmo were congratulated by Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko who said: “It’s always so lovely to see the bond each MP has with their dog. Congratulations to Simon and Cosmo who obviously won their constituents’ hearts.”

Overall winner was Diesel, a German Shepherd owned by Rob Flello, MP for Stoke-on-Trent South.
