CARNIVAL queen Georgina Thornton was the star of the day at Brighouse Charity Gala.

The 18-year-old former Rastrick High pupil has just finished studying a BTEC in Performing Arts and an AS in Drama at Huddersfield New College and is now looking for an apprenticeship.

She is the daughter of Simon and Jane Thornton from Rastrick and has a brother, Jack.

The gala was attended by around 10,000 people.

It began with a big parade to the gala site in Wellholme Park. Brightly dressed floats, bands and various walking groups led the way as crowds lined the streets to cheer them on their way.

The procession cavalcade featured carnival queen Georgina alongside her attendant Catherine Wheelhouse-Brown.

The carnival in the park featured several attractions along with 90 stalls, many run by both local and national charities.

In the arena performers included Brighouse Star Twirlers, Eclipse Parade Band, Diamond Gymnastic Display and Cheer-vision Yorkshire.

Charities included Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Calderdale Down’s Syndrome Group, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and various children’s charities.
