STUDENTS from across West Yorkshire are to battle it out in this year's Young Consumer of the Year Competition.

Students go head to head, putting their knowledge of consumer rights, Europe and travel, food and health, money and finance to the test.

Pupils from St John Fisher High School at Dewsbury, Castle Hall Middle in Mirfield, Colne Valley High at Linthwaite, Heckmondwike Grammar and Greenhead College, Huddersfield, are taking part in the district heat in Leeds tonight.

The competition starts with a newspaper round, followed by team and individual questions and a `fastest finger first' buzzer round.

Students from 20 schools are taking part in in Leeds.

If successful they will go to the regional final, where an all-expenses-paid, three-day trip to London awaits the winner.

Graham Hebblethwaite, West Yorkshire's Chief Trading Standards Officer said: "The aim of the competition is to raise awareness of consumer rights among young people to ensure that they are informed, confident consumers."
