The race is on to get Huddersfield’s magnificent railway station ready for the greatest ever sporting event to hit the town.

With Tour de France mania set to peak over the next few weeks workmen are racing against the clock to get the landmark building ready before the Grand Depart comes to town on July 6.

Station manager Paul Jackson said: “Kirklees Council, as owners of the building, are replacing stone mantels above some of the windows and other pieces of damaged stone around the edge of the roof area right across the front of the building.

“The works are expected to last until early July with completion prior to the Tour de France, so that the building is looking in better condition for the event as it will undoubtedly feature in media coverage.

“The station and the two pubs remain fully open during the works so there will not be any disruption to customers passing through.”

Anyone visiting St George’s Square for the first time might be forgiven for thinking it is a centre permanently in the grip of scaffolding.

Almost all of the station is covered by unsightly poles and timbers and two other historical buildings are also undergoing work, the George Hotel and Tite’s.
