A HUDDERSFIELD radio station has raised another £1,870 for earthquake victims.

Staff and supporters from Radio Paigham in Springwood had already collected more than £8,000 late last year for the Kashmir region of Pakistan which was struck by a powerful earthquake in 2005.

The money has gone towards helping an orphanage and building a mosque.

Mr Nisar Smiler, chairman of Radio Paigham, which broadcasts at holiday times, said: “The main driving force behind our fund-raising is senior radio member Mr Fazal-Ur-Rehman Khan, who has collected a substantial amount from the local mosques and members of the community.

“It is down to his hard work that we have been able to help the orphanage and mosque so much.’’

The cash just raised will go to a girls orphanage to help the youngsters become more independent by learning sewing and handicraft skills.

The cheque is going to Muslim Global Relief, based in Nelson, Lancashire, which is working with victims in Kashmir.

Mr Mohammed Farooq travelled over from Nelson to collect the cheque at a presentation event in Springwood, the food and drink was sponsored by the Eastern Delight takeaway of Manchester Road,Longroyd Bridge.
