TORRENTIAL rain hindered Huddersfield commuters on their journey home last night.

The heavy downpour made driving almost impossible - and came a year to the day that terrible floods which caused hundreds of thousands of pounds damage across the district.

A Kirklees Council highways spokesman said six roads in Holmfirth, Milnsbridge and Oakes area were damaged by the deluge which started shortly before 5pm yesterday.

In all cases manholes had been raised and broken after failing to cope with surface water.

The council was working with Yorkshire Water today to assess what repairs were necessary.

The subway leading to the Alfred Street multi-storey car park reopened this morning after water levels had reached three to four feet high inside last night.

Staff at Fitness First, Lockwood, were also mopping up this morning after a leaking roof forced the building to close.

Worries about water getting into the electrics caused the gym to close overnight on safety grounds although it re-opened at lunchtime today.
