HOLIDAYMAKERS unable to return to Huddersfield due to the ash cloud grounding flights could face a nasty shock when they finally get back to work.
A solicitor has warned that employees are not entitled to paid time off work for the days they are marooned at airports.
Gareth Dando, employment lawyer with Ramsdens Solicitors said: “With many employees struggling to reach home, hard-pressed employers could insist that unplanned absence is treated as unpaid leave.”
The Federation of Small Businesses has warned that many firms will struggle and will also face extra costs due to lost business opportunities.
Mr Dando said: “Employers should make sure penalties for missing work are fully explained to employees before contemplating cutting salaries.”
