A SCHOOL will try once more to get planning permission to take boarders.

Rastrick Independent School’s plan was deferred earlier this month over a lack of detail about how many students and staff would be needed for their accommodation block.

The Ogden Lane school wants permission to build two dormitories for the students to live in.

But councillors on Calderdale’s planning committee deferred making a decision because it “lacked detail” after objections about the scale of the school’s plans.

Traffic issues and a lack of parking were raised, along with proximity to neighbouring houses.

Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker, said in a letter of support, that it would create 40 new jobs.

Objectors asked where 40 extra members of staff would park.

But a statement has been submitted to Calderdale Council clarifying their plans, which says: “No additional staff will be required to deal with teaching, classroom assistance, domestic or caretaking functions as a consequence of providing on-site boarding facilities for 22 pupils.

“The change is in the way the children are housed, ie living on site instead of boarding at other premises and being brought to the school daily.

“In effect this will actually reduce the amount of traffic on a daily basis.”

They added that three members of staff will be needed for the dormitory provision, likely to be existing staff members working on an evening. Planners have recommended approval by councillors at the meeting on Tuesday.
