PARALYMPIC athlete Georgina Oliver faced questions from pupils at her former school yesterday.

The athlete, who hopes to be chosen for the London 2012 Paralympic team, took part in Rastrick High School’s BBC School Report Day.

Year nine pupils Callum Robson and Courtney Jackson interviewed Georgina about her training routines. They then had to write news stories around the theme of sports and the world to fit in with the Olympics.

Once checked by teachers, pupils’ stories were uploaded to the BBC website for all to see. Many of the school’s year nine students took part.

They also interviewed Year 13 student, Rebecca Blaeford, who plays for Huddersfield Town Ladies about her passion for the sport.

Deputy Leader in PE, Jason Battye, was reported to be a secret international Aussie Rules star by two pupils who wrote about his background in the sport and aim to play for Great Britain. Jason is currently captain of the Huddersfield Rams.

Pupil Izzy Firth, 14, said: “BBC School News Day has been a brilliant experience as it has taught me a lot about journalism and writing.

“I have also learnt about how to work to a set time and presenting information in the form of a newspaper.”

Katie Moylan, English teacher said: “The students worked with enthusiasm and independence and, as a result, produced some exceptional work covering a variety of topics.

“Knowing that their work would appear on the internet motivated them all the more while giving them real, hands on experience of the media.”
