A SHOPKEEPER wants permission to sell alcohol – but 132 people have objected.

Muhammad Ismail, of the Premier Convenience, at 85 Highfield Road, Rastrick, has applied to Calderdale Council to sell alcohol from 7am until 11pm Monday to Saturday and 8am until 11pm on Sundays.

Its former premises licence was cancelled by the previous licence holder in May 2010.

One resident objected by letter to the council saying: “yet another off-licence in our area, directly next door to two existing off-licence retail outlets”.

Concerns were raised about the “public nuisance” residents believe another off-licence would lead to with gangs of youths gathering nearby.

Clr Ann McAllister, ward councillor for Rastrick, wrote of behalf of concerned residents.

Anti-social activity in the area was already a concern which would be “further exacerbated”.

The application will be decided at Calderdale’s Licensing Sub Committee on Wednesday at 10am.
