CUTS to a library’s opening times are too deep, a councillor has said.

Rastrick Library faces losing hours as part of Calderdale Council’s cuts to its library provision.

A consultation period has started with staff but more information has not been provided. Calderdale Council said the details were being finalised.

But Rastrick’s Clr Ann McAllister says the cuts are a step too far and that the council’s ‘one size fits all’ policy is unfair on Rastrick.

At Monday’s Rastrick Ward Forum Clr McAllister said: “Rastrick has been listed for a cut in its operating hours in a swathe of changes to medium to large libraries.

“Most of the libraries in this area have suffered cuts; Rastrick library’s cuts appears to be disproportionate to its usage and its base.”

She said fellow Rastrick councillor, Christine Beal, had written to the council’s Cabinet representing their concerns about plans for the Crowtrees Lane library.

“We are not happy with the justification which has been put forward and we are actively trying to stop the council reducing hours.”

One resident at the Ward Forum said that the lack of ramp was a barrier to many people using the library.

Clr Beal said planning restrictions prevented it being done a few years ago but that she would chase the matter up with the council.
