And organisers were delighted with the turnout at Ravensknowle Park in Moldgreen.

Publicity secretary David Smith said: “It was absolutely brilliant, the sun came out just as the procession was starting so the timing couldn’t have been better.

“When you miss a year you do wonder whether people will come back but it’s been absolutely jam-packed with around three thousand people.

“It was good to get everybody back and see so many smiling faces – the gala has come back with a vengeance!”

The day kicked off with a grand procession featuring this year’s gala Queen, 11-year-old Olivia Botchway-Clarke.

Olivia, who lives in Dalton, also helped officially open the event together with the deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Ken Smith.

The programme included a fancy dress competition, a talent show, cheerleaders, and crowd-pleasing stunts from 3Sixty cycle display team.
