LOTTERY millionaires Susan and Michael Crossland got their hands dirty on an environmental project.

They and other Lottery millionaires volunteered to clear Tongue Gutter, in Sheffield.

The green corridor of land is part of the Trans-Pennine Trail which had fallen into disrepair.

The land had been filled with rubbish, long grass and weeds, but the couple, along with other Lottery winners across the region and UK, cleared the area.

New benches and gates and the restoration of others will now provide access for the local community to the trail.

Organiser Garry Smith said: “We were delighted that so many lottery winners volunteered to give up their time and help Green City Action.

“With their help and hard work we’ve been able to clear the area and help provide access for the local community to the Trans-Pennine Trail.”

The Crosslands, from Ravensthorpe, have four children and scooped their £1,218,618 win in July last year. They were joined for the project by other winners with combined winnings of £25m.

Mrs Crossland said: “I decided to volunteer as I thought it sounded like a great project, which hopefully will get used by lots of people.

“We have found it really rewarding to put some of our spare time to good use and it’s been great fun too with everyone mucking in.”
