READING really matters at Paddock Junior, Infant and Nursery School.

Books and the written word are a major part of school life.

So much so that the Kirklees mobile library service makes regular visits so children can choose their own books and become library members.

There is also a popular Reading Friends group, where parents, carers, and community members share books with children to improve their literacy skills.

Adults work with three or four children a week to boost reading levels.

Mary Hudson is a Reading Friend at the school and is also a support worker and lunchtime supervisor.

She said: “I read a lot with my own children and it is great being able to help children at the school develop their skills.”

Strong links with nearby Royds Hall High School are further developed with a Reading Club where children from Paddock visit the school to read with students and staff.
