DEIGHTON carnival will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Saturday.

With on-stage performances dancers and singers, this year’s festival will also play host to a football tournament.Organisers believe it is set to bring in a bigger crowd than last year.

Organiser Howard Belafonte said: "We have a new emerging community that has come into the area.

"We hope that the event will bring together the different communities including Polish, Asian and eastern Europeans.

"They have all been getting involved with the workshops that we have been running.

"The carnival is not just a one day event, but a six month programme of workshops, training, learning, mentoring, life skills and activities – and all will be showcased on Saturday".

The event will take place between noon and 6pm at the Deighton Centre.

The day will include a carnival procession, a fun fair, stalls, zone Majorettes, penalty shoot-outs and a graffiti wall.

An information tent and many other displays will be open throughout the event.

There is a focus on food from around the world along with hair braiding and face painting.

Howard stressed that there is a strong sporting influence at this carnival.

Anyone wishing to enter a team should contact Deighton Sports Arena or Deighton Into Sports Project.

Howard said: "Everybody in the community is excited about it, especially after last year was so successful.

"We have also invited some drummers from Deighton High School and they will play the steel pan drums on the main stage.

"We have some stall spaces available if anybody would like to get involved with that.

"It is completely free and we will begin applying for funding for next year’s event in September and we just hope people come along and support it.

"The Deighton Carnival is one of Kirklees’ premier events and permanent fixture on the summer events diary and the workshops are open and accessible to any group or individuals who want to get involved.

"They take place at various venues throughout the community".
