A YOUNG mother who jumped to her death told her sister she ‘wanted to fly’.

Rebecca Little, 23, tragically died of injuries sustained in the fall from Lonsbrough Flats in Huddersfield in 2008.

After a resumed inquest into her death yesterday, her younger sister Jodie said Rebecca, known as Becky, suffered from postnatal depression after the birth of her daughter Isabella, now aged three.

Jodie, of Berry Brow, said she believes her sister would still be alive now if she had received the help she needed.

Coroner Roger Whittaker recorded a verdict that Rebecca took her own life while the balance of her mind was disturbed.

He asked Jodie if she believed Rebecca had intended to take her own life this time and she replied: “Yes, I think she did.

“She expressed the view that she wanted to fly and that’s what I keep thinking of.”

At a previous hearing he’d heard about Miss Little’s history of mental health problems and drug use.

After the inquest Jodie, 21, said: “I begged for the help she needed.

“She had postnatal depression, the drug use was only a small part, everything around it played a part.

“She loved her daughter, she was an outgoing person and we were always very close.”

Jodie saw Rebecca leap to her death at the flat they shared on Southgate on April 14, 2008.

Jodie tried to stop her from falling from their seventh-floor flat after seeing her hanging over the edge. She pulled her away but Miss Little ran back and threw herself off while her sister phoned the police.

Jodie said: “It has had a big impact on my life, you can’t imagine what it’s like to see your own sister do that.

“I’ll always remember her but it’s hard to forget what I saw.

“People will think it’s a drugs issue, but I just want people to know that she had postnatal depression and it all came from that.

“She wasn’t hard on drugs at all.”

Miss Little was a pupil at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Dalton but later moved to London where she went to high school.

She returned to Huddersfield aged 17 and her sister Jodie followed her back to the town four years later and they lived together until Miss Little’s death.

Jodie added: “She loved her daughter, the postnatal depression took over. Isabella is three now and I see her whenever I can, she’s a very cute little girl.”

A post mortem revealed that Miss Little died from multiple injuries.

Her body had traces of amphetamines and cannabis, but these were ruled out as having any real effect on her when she died.

Miss Little had taken previous overdoses and her sister had called police on several occasions in an attempt to help her.

Only a month before her death Miss Little was arrested after an incident on the balcony.

Pc Nigel Eaton said: “She was close to the edge looking outwards and appeared to be talking to herself.”
