A SURVEY of business leaders in the North East has shown that almost three-quarters are against Government plans for a Regional Assembly.

The North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) surveyed its members using the same questions that will appear in the official referendum in that region on November 4.

Of nearly 900 res- ponses, 74% indicated they would vote "No" to an elected assembly.

NECC president Alan Ferguson said: "The majority of businesses responding to the survey are just not convinced at all by the argument for an elected regional assembly in its current form and feel it would be just more bureaucracy which we could do without."

Referendums for North West and Yorkshire and Humberside assemblies were postponed by the government.
