70 years ago today a military operation began which irrevocably altered the world.

The Allied powers, forced out of mainland Europe by Hitler and his Axis counterparts, attacked beaches in northern France to obtain a toe-hold to battle the Nazis.

The battle for the beaches and subsequent fields and towns of Normandy cost thousands of lives as Britain, the USA, Canada and other powers sought to throw back the foul spectre of the Fuhrer and his regime.

Today we remember the brave men who lost their lives fighting for our future freedoms.
