Residents on a Mirfield housing estate were left bemused by grass verges cropped in a “Mohawk-style.”

Sally Rhodes took these pictures, above, showing the verges in Northway on the London Park Estate.

A lawnmower-sized strip around the edges had been cut short with the rest of the grass left long and lush.

Sally said many elderly and disabled people lived in the flats nearby and the bizarre verges did little to enhance the estate’s look or reputation.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said the state of the grass was nothing to do with a council cost-cutting trial where grass is to be left to grow longer or not trimmed at all.

He said: “The outer verges are cut by a smaller machine because the large mowers can’t get to the edge.

“The smaller machine cuts the verges and then a larger machine follows. There can be a short delay between the two cuts but in this instance the delay has been a few days and is due to staff sickness.

“We’re aware that the cut is outstanding and is scheduled to be done later this week. This has nothing to do with new standards of maintenance.”
