Residents want Yorkshire Water to get to the bottom of a drainage problem which leaves a street flooded during heavy rain.

People in The Knowl, off Knowl Road, Mirfield, say a manhole cover bursts open every time there is a downpour.

Mrs Denise Wadsworth, who lives nearby, said the problem had been going on for the last 18 months and it was about time Yorkshire Water sorted it out.

“It’s a real health and safety hazard,” said Mrs Wadsworth. “It’s been like this about 18 months now and it’s so frustrating.

“Water shoots up out of the manhole cover and goes all over the road. Workmen have been out to it six or seven times but it still keeps happening.

“When we had the heavy rain this week the water was just shooting up out of the road.

When the really bad weather comes this water will freeze and it will be like a sheet of ice. It’s going to be dangerous.”

The manhole cover is close to a row of shops including a newsagent’s, a barber’s and The Laundry Room, a laundrette.

Derrick Watson, who runs the laundrette, said Yorkshire Water had dug the road up several times in a bid to solve the problem.

“There is obviously a blockage somewhere which backs up,” he said. “Yorkshire Water have now put in a new manhole in the road but they have just moved the problem from one place to another.

“Whenever it rains the junction of The Knowl and Knowl Road gets flooded. It’s a joke.”

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “We would like to reassure residents and businesses in the area that we are committed to finding a resolution to this street flooding problem that occurs during periods of heavy rainfall.

“We have already carried out several investigations and on November 23 we will start building a new manhole to hopefully stop the sewage leaks occurring.”
