Residents of some flats in Liversedge had to be evacuated after a bin store caught fire.

Firefighters were called to Fairfield Court by occupants at just before 9.30pm on Saturday.

The cause of the fire is now being investigated.

The bin store attached to one of the flats was well alight and the blaze had spread to the property.

The windows were scorched and the flames were just starting to push through the ventilation duct when fire crews arrived from Dewsbury and Cleckheaton.

People in one of the flats had to remain inside while firefighters knocked the flames back but they were not in any immediate danger.

An elderly occupant had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Fire crews also had to deal with a gas leak, which was not ignited and the utility company arrived and capped the leak.

The electrical supply was also damaged and the building was left without power for some time.
