NEW research shows Kirklees residents are doing a good job fighting climate change.

The Energy Saving Trust (EST) has unveiled figures showing carbon emissions by council area.

Kirklees came 160th out of 434 local authorities in the UK. The district finished ahead of Calderdale, but behind Wakefield, Bradford and Leeds.

The worst-performing council area was Down in Northern Ireland. The City of London came top.

EST chief executive Philip Sellwood said: “This report isn’t about singling out local authorities, as each area is unique and has its own challenges and opportunities.

“A targeted, localised approach is critical for reducing household carbon emissions.”

The EST will open a network of centres across England and Wales next year to give advice.
