Homes to miss on bin emptying at Christmas
EVERY Huddersfield household will miss a dustbin collection over Christmas and New Year.
But Kirklees Council chiefs hope that more people will turn to recycling to help them clear the festive rubbish backlog.
Residents have been urged to do their bit to reduce waste and help reduce delays in household collection services over the Christmas and New Year.
They have been asked to make use of recycling facilities and to watch out for stickers on their bins telling them collection days over the Christmas period.
Collections will follow a similar pattern to last year with household collection services operating as normal up to, and including, Thursday December 21.
Clr Martyn Bolt, Cabinet member for the service, said: "During the two weeks from lunchtime December 22, every household will miss one collection.
"We get an immense amount of co-operation from householders throughout the year and that includes the Christmas period.
"Most people accept that, like everyone else, the refuse collection crews deserve to enjoy the Christmas bank holiday period with their families.
"They also appreciate that there is also an increased amount of waste produced - a lot of which can be recycled.
"That inevitably means that as well as catching up for the holiday days the crews also have to deal with collecting a significantly increased amount of waste, so this means that collections can take a bit longer.
"I would like to thank everyone in advance for the co-operation and understanding I know we will get from the vast majority of residents and urge them to do their bit to help by making the best use of re-cycling opportunities the council provides, particularly the household waste recycling sites, which will be open as normal apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
"The aim will be for the collection crews to catch up with collections as quickly as possible and for as much information as possible to be given to residents, so that everyone knows when their bins will be emptied over Christmas.
"Please watch out for stickers advising you of collection dates. These will be stuck on your bins in the run up to Christmas."
The five household waste and recycling centres are at Emerald Street, Huddersfield; Bent Ley Road, Meltham; Bromley Farm, Upper Cumberworth; Thornhill Road, Dewsbury; and Nab Lane, Birstall.
They all open from 8am until 4pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am until 4pm on Sunday, except for the bank holidays.
Kirklees has published a list (right) of changes to the grey bin collection times over Christmas.
Green bin collections over Christmas and New Year will vary. The dates are shown on the sticker on green bins or can be found through the www.kirklees.gov.uk website.
