A LEAKY church is set to be dry in time for Christmas.

Work has begun on a major restoration project at St Cuthbert’s church in Birkby.

The crumbling building was in such disrepair that water ran down the walls during services.

Last year the Grade 2 listed church was one of four Huddersfield churches to receive a share of £½m from English Heritage.

It topped the list with a £173,000 hand-out and church leaders also spent three years raising money for the project.

Rev Mary Railton-Crowder, said she was looking forward to worshipping without the sound effects of water landing in buckets.
