He's a dog that certainly lived up to his name.

And last night, Lucky the dog-napped terrier was reunited with his delighted owner.

Young Jay Micklethwaite, nine, returned home from school to be reunited with the Jack Russell terrier he thought was gone forever.

Police had been investigating the reported theft of Lucky from the family’s narrowboat, which was moored at Aspley.

Two men and a women had been seen running off along the towpath with Lucky having lured him from the boat with titbits of food.

But late on Monday night, two girls found Lucky wandering near Leeds Road at Bradley Mills and caught hold of him.

They took him to Ricky’s Bar in Leeds Road as they knew the owner had dogs and he cared for Lucky.

Yesterday, the Jack Russell terrier that had been rescued previously from an abusive home was collected by his grateful owner, Stephen Micklethwaite.

And that meant a great surprise for young Jay when he returned from school.

His grandmother Mrs Barbara Gallacher said: “It was wonderful news.

“It’s the perfect ending we wanted after days of anguish.

“Jay was terribly upset when Lucky was taken but now he’s over the moon.

“We don’t know who the two girls are but we certainly owe them our thanks.”
