HUDDERSFIELD children will soon have the chance to practice to become the next Andy Murray.

The Scottish star is in action today against Croatian veteran Ivan Ljubicic in the third round of Wimbledon.

And young people from Huddersfield will soon be able to brush up on their strokes at Greenhead Park.

Kirklees Council has begun a revamp of the nine tennis courts.

New surfaces are being laid on the courts which will be finished with acrylic paint.

New fencing is also being put on the four terraces.

Officials hope the courts, which were set up in 1928, will be ready to re-open in time for the start of the school summer holidays next month.

Kirklees Cabinet member for regeneration Clr Peter McBride is looking forward to the completion of the work.

The Dalton Labour man said yesterday: “The courts are an important aspect of the park’s facilities and this refurbishment will make them even more attractive.

“I would expect them to be very busy once the work is complete and it may be that local tennis clubs may be interested in using what should be top-class facilities.”

Players will be able to book one-hour or two-hour sessions at the park’s cafe.

The revamp, which is being carried out by contractors C R Reynolds, also includes resurfacing two multi-use games areas, which can be used for basketball, netball and five-a-side.

The sporting upgrade is separate from a wider £5.4m revamp of Greenhead Park.

Heritage Lottery Fund and Kirklees Council are meeting the cost of the improvement work, which began in October 2008.

The upgrade includes a new conservatory and restaurant by the main park entrance and the return of the ornamental lake.

The bandstand and cafe have also been renovated and railings added to the walls for the first time since the Second World War.
