Revised plans to alleviate traffic chaos in Hipperholme are being worked on.

But fears have surfaced about the compulsory purchase of land to make the £3.4m proposal possible.

A survey by the Hipperholme Preservation Society found that 2,024 out of 2029 people were against the idea put forward by Calderdale Council and they asked Cabinet to comment on any compulsory purchase order threat.

Clr Barry Collins said: “There was a lot of opposition to the original scheme and we are looking at the proposal and will bring it forward for public discussion and for a decision.

Asked about the threat of compulsory purchase, Clr Collins said: “At the moment I don’t want to comment on that. I’ll wait until we bring the scheme forward.”

He said the government funding was still available for a project to improve traffic flow at the junction.

Councillors are to look again before committing themselves to £3.4m junction improvement scheme in Hipperholme.

Calderdale Council secured Government funding for the work to try to ease traffic jams at the crossroads, which sees traffic from Brighouse, Halifax, Cleckheaton and Bradford merge.

The wide-ranging proposal would involve the council obtaining slices of land from the former Whitehall pub on the corner of Denholme Gate Road and Leeds Road along with land from Christ Church on the corner of Wakefield Road and Brighouse Road and the car park in between Leeds Road and Wakefield Road.

Leeds Road would be completely transformed and Denholme Gate Road would be widened, creating three lanes on the Wakefield Road exit.

Right turns from Halifax would be banned and instead drivers would have to go round the car park area inbetween the new development and along Wakefield Road, but there would be a new right turn from Wakefield Road into Leeds Road.
