CONSTRUCTION students at Huddersfield Technical College have had their hard work honoured.

The college’s School of Construction, Engineering and Transport held a graduation and prize-giving ceremony last week at its base at Brunel House on Leeds Road.

A total of 150 apprentice bricklayers, carpenters and joiners attended and some received prizes for outstanding achievements.

One of the award winners was Heidi Spivey, 16, the only female carpentry student.

Heidi, an apprentice carpenter and joiner with Kirklees Council, won the best First Year Site Carpentry Award. She is a second year student on the college’s NVQ Level 2/3 carpentry and joinery course.

Bricklayer Paul Maple won a mountain bike from James Wilby Builders Merchant Limited, for his efforts over the past year.

Third year carpentry student Tom Gooch won the GF Interiors Cup for outstanding joinery and received a prize of a power drill from ACK.

Tom, 18, is an apprentice at Burns Contractors in Aspley, and won a gold medal in the Skill Build 2007 National Finals in Birmingham in October. He will go on to represent the UK in the Skill Build ‘Olympics’.

The School of Construction hosted the Yorkshire Skill Build championships this year and will do so again on June 27 next year.
