A PRIZE-WINNING pianist, who cheated death, has been named as the
winner of the 7th British Contemporary Piano Competition. Richard Uttley, of Birkby, who is studying music at Cambridge
University, was awarded the first prize of £1,500 after playing his way to success during the competition held at the University of Surrey. He will also perform at various concert engagements, including a
concert during the Guildford International Music Festival in March. Richard, 19, is a former student of Greenhead College and has
performed and won several classes at the popular Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland Music Festival. In 2002, aged just 14, he nearly died after contracting meningitis B
and septicaemia, but he fought the illness and was well enough to compete in the Mrs Sunderland Festival the following year.
