A LEADING lawyer in Huddersfield has been invited to address a major conference on community care.

Nigel Priestley, senior partner at Ridley & Hall, will speak about the issues affecting “special guardians” – such as grandparents caring for grandchildren.

The conference next Wednesday in London has been organised by Community Care magazine with support from the Grandparents Association.

It will focus on how local authorities interpret their duties on supporting and funding special guardianships and how anomalies across the country can be ironed out.

Mr Priestley specialises in care cases and was recognised for his work representing carers by being named Solicitor of the Year in the category for private practice at the 2010 Law Society Excellence Awards.

Mr Priestley has forged a reputation for his work fighting claims on behalf of “kinship carers” who end up looking after the children of families and friends to stop them being put into foster care.

He was also recognised in the awards for his involvement in advice centre work, charity fundraising and efforts to form a twinning scheme between Huddersfield Law Society and the Uganda Law Society.
