A Ripponden man and a construction firm must pay a combined total of £11,230 for dumping controlled waste on land in Calderdale without a valid environmental permit.
Michael Edward Jagger, 63, of Royd Lane, Ripponden, and Earthworks Solutions Ltd, of Barnsley, were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court following an investigation by the Environment Agency.
Each of the defendants was each found guilty of an environmental offence following a two-week trial in March.
Jagger was fined £1,000, and must pay £3,850 costs and a £15 victim surcharge; Earthworks was fined £2,500, with £3850 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Syan Ventom, representing the Environment Agency, told the court that Earthworks and Jaggar breached waste regulations in 2010 when they handled excavated material from a development in Broad Street in Halifax.
They were all involved in taking the waste to a site in Raglan Street where it was dumped, even though there was no environmental permit in existence to allow the deposit of waste at that site.
Waste transfer notes and invoices show that 310 loads were tipped there between August and November 2010.
Gail Gray, Environment Officer at the Environment Agency, said: “The court has appropriately penalised four defendants for handling waste in blatant disregard for environmental protection laws.
“Waste crime of this nature can have a terrible impact on the environment and local communities – that’s why it is vital that those who handle waste work within the regulations and do not solely concentrate on the pursuit of profit”.
Both the firm and Jagger were charged with depositing, or knowingly caused or knowingly permitting the deposit of controlled waste, on land at Raglan Street, Halifax.
