Hospital staff had to deal with more abusive and violent patients last year.

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has revealed there were 61 incidents involving people under their care – four more than last year.

But the increase in incidents, which include attacks or verbal abuse on nurses and doctors, came amid a slight drop in the overall level of incidents recorded.

There were a total of 8,412 incidents of all kinds across Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital.

They include two incidents involving anaesthesia, 315 occasions where clinical tests went wrong, 698 incidents with medication, 456 problems with child birth and 103 security incidents.

More than 2,080 of the incidents were categorised as accidents that could have injured the person involved – 1,786 of which were falls.

They include more than 950 accidents or incidents involving staff, a slight decrease from over 1,000 in 13/14.
