The River Holme turned a bright orange yesterday.

The bizarre colour change was caused by nothing more sinister than deposits of ochre from a disused mine at Jackson Bridge.

And the naturally occurring minerals will have little environmental impact, the Environment Agency has said.

But on the Examiner's Facebook and Twitter accounts people came up with their own wacky theories on what could have caused the river to turn orange.

On Facebook Michael Lee Hargave blamed it on a lady falling in the river and their foundation coming off while Steven Birkhead wanted to know: "Who's been putting Irn Bru in the river guys?"

Paul Walker added: "I can see an oompa loompa hiding in the bushes."
