A jam prone slip road is set to be altered in a bid to speed up traffic.

Kirklees Council has said it will change the single lane connecting Castlegate with Bradford Road into two lanes.

The route by Dunelm Mill is often snarled up as motorists give way to traffic coming from Southgate, adjacent to Halfords.

At peak times, queues can tail back up the ring road, causing problems for drivers trying to merge in from the A629.

Buses heading north on Bradford Road must also queue as there is no bus lane at that point.

Slip road from Castlegate to Bradford Road, Huddersfield, to become two lanes.

A council spokesperson said: “The proposal for scheme is to widen the slip road between Huddersfield Ring Road and the A641 Bradford Road to two lanes.

“It is proposed that the left lane will be designated for the retail park and the bus lane, and the right lane for all other traffic.

“The aim of the scheme is to increase capacity on the slip road and therefore improve journey times and reduce incidences of vehicles queuing back onto Huddersfield Ring Road.”

It is thought the work will cost about £25,000 to complete and will take place sometime in the 2016/17 financial year.

Meanwhile, work to install the controversial “bus gates” at High Street and Ramsden Street near Huddersfield Town Hall is still ongoing.
