A MAN has been charged with murdering a Huddersfield teenager.

Christopher Hill, 39, of Lepton, was appearing before magistrates today charged with killing 18-year-old Robert Broadbent.

He will appear before Dewsbury magistrates as it is understood he has been held at Dewsbury police station since his arrest on Sunday.

Detectives have confirmed that Robert, who also lived in Lepton, had been stabbed to death.

His body was discovered at 1.45am on Sunday morning in the corner of the Fitness First car park, next to Huddersfield Rugby Union Club’s bowling green.

The spot where he was discovered is close to a large mill dam which is a popular spot for anglers.

Detectives today urged a potentially vital witness to come forward.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide And Major Enquiry Team have revealed that a man contacted police at around 4.30pm on Sunday and are anxious for the man to phone back.

The man remained anonymous during the call.

Det Supt Steve Payne, who is leading the investigation, said: “We would ask the caller to get back in touch regarding blood-stained clothing he may have discovered and which could be of significance to the inquiry.

“We think this blood-stained clothing has been discarded somewhere between the mill pond at the Waterside area in Lockwood and the School Lane area of Paddock.’’

Police have also revealed that a car park in Aspley may have a link to the inquiry. They want anyone who was there between 1am and 2am on Sunday to contact them.

Robert lived with his mother, Joanne, and stepfather Dean Hanlon in Lepton. He also leaves a younger brother and sister.

Mr Hanlon has posted a message of thanks for the support the family has received since Sunday.

The message on the website Gone Too Soon states: “Robert, we will miss you forever. You were larger than life itself wherever you entered – you filled the room.

“We love you so much. We would give anything just to have one more second with you, to talk and say goodbye – anything for one second. We will never forget you, Robert, never.’’

He added: “Me and Joanne would like to say thank you to everyone for their messages of support. We really appreciate it.’’
