A WOULD-BE thief wielding a knife found the tables turned when he was punched in the face.

A 21-year-old man from Paddock was walking down Longwood Road, Longwood, when he was threatened by a stranger clutching the knife with a four-inch blade.

The man lashed out and quickly got onto a passing bus heading to Huddersfield where he reported the matter early on Friday.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan of Huddersfield police said: "No money was taken and the lad just finished up with a sore hand.

"He's obviously been very brave but he's lucky he hasn't been knifed," said Sgt O'Sullivan."

The suspect was Afro-Caribbean, aged between 17 and 20, thin and 5ft 7ins tall.

He wore a black hooded jumper and dark trousers and trainers.
