He’s not your average football photographer and he’s certainly got an eye for the usual angle.

By day Robbie Jay Barrett, 21, of Brighouse, is a photography technician at a school.

But by night and at weekends Robbie is a freelance photographer more often than not found at Huddersfield Town games.

Robbie has covered Town home and away for the last four seasons and has captured some stunning images.

Not for Robbie the goals, tackles and headers, he looks beyond the match action seeking to grab an eye catching shot that’s out of the ordinary.

“I am looking for something different, something fans won’t see,” said Robbie. “I might focus on a player’s boots, a detail on the kit or turn my back on the football and concentrate on an interesting character in the crowd.

“I like seeing things differently and try to create an image beyond the football.”

Robbie, who works at Brooksbank School in Elland, studied photography for two years at Bradford College and as part of his early work experience joined Examiner photographer Julian Hughes at a Town game.

He has had work published in national newspapers and magazines as part of work for an agency and separate commissions and has also worked for sports firm Nike.

Robbie’s portfolio includes music concerts and festivals but football is where his heart is.

“I was a Liverpool fan when I was younger but going to so many Town matches you get a feeling for the club and the players,” he said.

“My ambition is to become a full-time photographer covering football but any kind of football.

“The love the grassroots stuff as well. It’s not all about the Champions League, Messi and Ronaldo.

“I’d love to be going to the European Championships but it’s probably a bit late now. Covering football for a living would be quite special.”
