A TORY is the first non-Labour chairman of West Yorkshire Fire Authority since it was founded in 1986.
Clr Robert Light took the helm following a two-year power-sharing deal between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.
A Liberal Democrat will chair the authority next year.
Clr Light, who is also leader of the Tory group on Kirklees Council, said: "Labour has enjoyed effective control of the fire authority for 18 years.
"Although our debating chamber thankfully sees very little party politicking, it is time for fresh ideas and far more transparent decision- making."
No group has an overall majority on the 22-strong authority.
Its make-up is nine Labour, seven Conservative, five Liberal Democrats and one independent.
Clr Gordon Beever, a Liberal Democrat who sits for Colne Valley on Kirklees Council, is the fire authority's finance chairman.
