A ROCK festival is to go ahead in Clayton West - despite fears over funding.

West Fest is set to take place on September 3.

It is being organised by Clayton West Scout Group and Kirklees Young People's Service in Denby Dale and Kirkburton.

About 150 young people are involved in the planning and production of the event.

Sixteen rock bands from Huddersfield and Barnsley have signed up to perform, including Unscathed Hero, Wizards of Rhythm, Session 9, The Raven Theory, Rhombus, Stylus, Crush and Gaia.

Organisers thought earlier that the event would fold because of a lack of cash.

But last week, Kirklees Council's Denby Dale, Kirkburton and Mirfield Area Committee granted £3,000 to the project.

This was boosted by £2,000 donated by Kirklees YPS Minor Grants Scheme and £1,000 from the Scout Group.

Event manager Ewan Scott said: "We fought hard to gain support for this event and we have the money to make it happen now.

"However, we still need to see additional funding applications come through to allow us to give the event some polish.

"We would also welcome sponsorship, in funds or in kind, from local businesses."

Entry to West Fest is free, as is transport to and from surrounding villages.

The event will operate a zero tolerance policy on alcohol and drugs.
