A rolling road block was put in place on the busy M62 after a rush hour smash.

Both sides of the motorway between junctions 25 at Brighouse and junction 24 at Ainley Top were closed for about an hour this morning.

The westbound smash, which involved a HGV and a Mercedes panel van, happened at about 8.25am and the motorway was closed while the air ambulance landed at the scene.

West Yorkshire Police said there was one casualty, a man, who was taken to a local hospital by road ambulance. His condition was not known.

Delays of up to 40 minutes were reported by Highways England as traffic built up.

Queues stretched back several miles in both directions and the surrounding road network, particularly around Ainley Top, was snarled up.

Highways England said recovery of the HGV was about to take place and lane one would be shut.

It was expected that the motorway would return to normal quite quickly after that.
