A man with a gambling problem took out his frustration at losing by attacking a roulette machine with a chair.

Daniel Barry Kelly had already been refused a refund of his losses on the machine in the Coral branch in Kirkgate, Huddersfield, and ended up causing £1,030 damage.

Robert Galley, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court yesterday that Kelly was identified from his fingerprints on the chair he used last October. He was also seen stealing £102 worth of spirits with another man in the Meltham Road branch of the Co-op in December – both offences in breach of a suspended sentence imposed in April last year for burglary and a conditional discharge in the summer for theft.

Kelly also asked for six other offences of theft from branches of the Co-op to be taken into consideration.

Alasdair Campbell, representing Kelly, said he accepted the court would have lost patience with him. “His vice is gambling and that is the reason behind his offending.”

Kelly, 20, of High Close, Almondbury, admitted damage and theft and was sent to a young offender institution for a total of nine months.
