A HOSPITAL worker lost £110 and had her birthday celebration ruined after a Huddersfield restaurant closed.

Yvonne Clay was due to celebrate her 60th birthday with 25 workmates at On The Square in St George's Square this month.

Yvonne, who works at the private Elland Hospital, left a £110 deposit.

But a few days before Yvonne and her friends were due to dine she received a call saying the restaurant was temporarily closing to fix a sewage problem.

It has not reopened and she is still waiting for a refund, despite promises that one would be paid.

The Mediterranean-style restaurant, formerly called Mas, has remained closed for six weeks and despite calls and visits to the premises Yvonne has not received a refund.

She said: "I had paid a £110 deposit, which I was told would be paid back on to my card.

"This has not happened and I have been unable to contact the owners.

"Not only was my birthday spoiled - it was too late to alter arrangements for such a large number of people - but we have lost our money."

Yvonne said she had finally managed to contact Mr Rafi Maywand, who had been running the restaurant, and he gave her a number for the accounts department.

She said: "I spoke to a lady in that department and she said either a cheque would be put in the post or money credited to my account. Nothing has happened."

The Examiner tried to contact the restaurant, but there was no response.

The restaurant itself is locked up and a large pile of mail is sitting behind the door.
