TENS of thousands of people across Huddersfield will enjoy a day off work when Prince William marries Kate Middleton next year.

Yesterday, Downing Street announced that April 29 would be made a public holiday so that the public could celebrate the union.

The announcement means that millions of workers will have two days off that week, as Easter Monday Bank Holiday falls on April 25 next year.

It is expected many people in Huddersfield will plan street parties to mark the Royal event, as they did when the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Prince Charles was in West Yorkshire yesterday, making a visit to Bradford to meet people from the wool industry, but made no mention of the royal wedding.

But the happy couple announced they would be tying the knot at Westminster Abbey and were “completely over the moon” after getting the spring wedding they wanted in a venue they chose for its “staggering beauty” and 1,000-year Royal history.

Brenda Morley from Denby Dale told the Examiner: “I’m really chuffed about this wedding that’s coming up and that they’ve announced the date.

“I’ve been watching it all on TV – I don’t miss a trick when it comes to the royal family.

“On the day of the wedding I will be sitting in front of the TV and watching the whole thing.”

The grandmother-of-three said she was a proud royalist.

She added: “A lot of people don’t agree but I think it’s really lovely of William to give Kate the ring that was his mum’s.

“He loved his mum and his manners and ways are very like Diana – I loved Diana very much – I like them all.

“I hope that William sticks to what he said when he said he will help Kate to change into royalty – I think he’ll make a lovely husband.”

The couple, both 28, announced their engagement last week, nine years after they met as students at St Andrew’s University.

William and Miss Middleton are said to be keen on making their wedding a national celebration and a concert in Hyde Park to mark the occasion has been proposed.

But the wedding plans have divided opinion.

Ian Brooke, chairman of Kirklees Save Our Services, said it was unfair that tax payers would have to foot a huge bill for security at the event.

The Almondbury man said: “I understand the family Windsor are paying for the wedding out of their own pockets which is nice – but the tax payer will have to pay an estimated £20m for the security.

“Considering everything that’s happening and the cutting back of important services across the country, I don’t think this should be the case.

“Personally speaking as a republican, I’ve nothing against the family Windsor but they own a large tracts of England between them and they have numerous businesses.

“I can’t understand why they feel they need to get hand-outs from the tax payer. Especially when a lot of ordinary people are not able to afford to get married or are in difficulty and can’t get a mortgage to buy a property together.

“It’s like rubbing salt in the wound that tax payers have to foot the bill for the security on such a lavish wedding.”
