Work is well under way on a new multi-million pound primary school for Huddersfield.

And contractors behind the project at Royds Hall Community School are confident they are on schedule for the school to open in September 2016.

The project is being funded by Kirklees Council as a response to the need for additional school places in the area.

The new school will provide an additional 420 primary school places in state-of-the-art facilities over the next five years. Over 1,500 young people aged from 3 to 16 years will be taught at the all-through school by 2020.

Huge mobile cranes were brought in to lift the steel columns and beams of the structure, giving people a good idea of the scale of the school’s expansion as well as the location of the main facilities, such as classrooms, dining room / sports hall.

The new build will complement the existing school.

Work starts on new primary building at Royds Hall Community School.

Clr Shabir Pandor, Kirklees Council, Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning said “The work completed so far has marked a significant milestone in what work will be carried out in the future.

“The crane lifted 125 tonnes of steel, and 500 tonnes of concrete will be laid for the ground and first floor.

“The building work is on schedule, which means we will have our new school facilities ready for September. It’s an exciting development for the whole of the area, creating local jobs and bringing investment into the town.

“There are 37 tradespeople currently on site, including apprentices. This will peak at 60 tradespeople being on site at any one time during the life of the project.

“The new primary school will make a positive difference to many local children’s education and learning. This goes far beyond bricks and mortar. It is all about the strong relationships we have with parents, teachers and other professionals. We all share the same aspirations for our young people – and want nothing more than the very best for them”.

Daniel Walsh, Senior Site Manager from BAM Construction said “Despite the recent weather conditions we are currently on schedule to finish on time. This is an exciting project as we really enjoy working in community settings such as schools”.
