HUNDREDS of Royds Ha ll pupils joined the Pedal for Pounds 4 – but they never even left the school.

The youngsters are split into five houses at the school known as communities and five bikes were set up all this week.

Pupils from the different communities hopped on the bikes whenever they could to try to beat their rival communities.

The five communities are Harold Wilson, Marie Curie, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Emily Pankhurst.

Marie Curie was the first to do the 280 miles – same as the riders doing the challenge around Yorkshire .

But Martin Luther King kept going on and on with the pupils eventually notching up virtually 300 miles.

Jonathon Schofield, leader of learning in PE, said it was hoped the challenge would raise more than £2,000 in sponsorship.

He added: “Each community had its own bike and it was amazing to see how the pupils really got into it. They were on the bikes between lessons, during lunch and after school

“In the end around 500 were involved along with around 30 staff.”
