There were plastic bottles and carrier bags everywhere you looked.

But Lockwood restaurant Grappolo’s hasn’t been struck by litter louts - instead it was the scene for a beauty pageant.

Miss West Yorkshire 2015 was hosted by the Italian eaterie, which helped to raise more than £16,000 for local children’s cancer charity Candlelighters.

And in a novel twist, women taking part in the contest modelled their dress creations fashioned out of recycled materials, including bottle cap ballgowns and newspaper frocks.

Contestant Kelly Mack was crowned the winner, making her the first mum to win since the rules changed last year allowing mothers and married women to enter.

Her dress featured dozens of metal bottle caps on the bust, with a skirt fashioned from cardboard beer coasters.

Mum of two Kelly, 22, from Swillington, near Leeds, said: “I’m so happy and overwhelmed! I can’t believe I’ve won.

“I’m on cloud nine. I’m looking forward to the year ahead!”

The eight finalists for this year’s contest lined the glitzy runway set up at the restaurant and show off their recycled dresses to promote environmental causes.

Runners up were Alice Armitage from Wakefield and Abbey Halliwell from Leeds.

The competition raised £16,200 for Candlelighters, nearly eight times the total of last year’s contest which raised £2,100.

Winner Kelly will now become an ambassador for the Leeds-based charity, which funds research into children’s cancer and provides affected families with holidays.

Miss West Yorkshire organiser Alexandra Devine said: “The night was incredible and I am so overwhelmed with how much we raised for such a fantasic local cause.

“Every single one of the finalists worked so hard and were an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the entire competition.”

Judges at the event included last year’s Huddersfield winner Amanda Nixon, Chloe Marsh from Candlelighters, Grappolo’s owner Hamid Meghran and local businesswoman Beverley Bonet.
