A STATUE of a rugby player and mill worker will provide a "gateway" for Dewsbury.

The 10ft to 15ft tall statue has been chosen to enhance one of the main routes into the town and introduce visitors to local traditions and achievements.

Its subject aims to include elements of the town's past and present.

It will be sited by the viaduct near Halifax Road and Bradford Road later this year.

Dewsbury Area Committee organised a competition for an official piece of art that would be a symbol for future generations in the town.

Jason Thomson, of Sheffield, was the winner and is now busily working on the piece.

It has been funded by the Local Public Sector Agreement and the Capital Heritage Plan and some private sector cash.
