Fire chiefs have warned people across West Yorkshire to “Stay Safe” during this week’s strike action by fire crews.

Firefighters at most stations, including Huddersfield and Brighouse, are to walk out for two bouts of strike action.

They will walk out between 6pm and 10pm on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

It is the latest in a series of strikes and industrial action over pensions reform.

Brigade chiefs in West Yorkshire expect to have about half the 54 fire appliances in the county available on the two evenings.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Walton said that while the service was confident in its contingency plans, they were asking the public to do their bit by taking extra care during these periods of reduced cover.

“The previous four strike periods have passed without major incident and our contingency measures have stood us in good stead.

“This time around we are into the run-up to Christmas and people may well be looking forward to parties this weekend.

“Whilst we do not want to spoil anyone’s fun, we hope the public can help us by helping themselves.

“We always remind drivers that roads can be hazardous in December, so if you are going out ensure your vehicle is prepared, drive carefully and never drink and drive.

“Before you leave your home turn off Christmas lights and remember to snuff out candles.

When you return from a night out do not set about making a meal – alcohol and cooking do not mix.

“Ultimately we want people across West Yorkshire to enjoy this festive period safely.”

The dispute centres on a Government plan to change the firefighters’ pension scheme from April 2015.

It would replace the two current pension schemes that include most operational firefighters.

The Fire Brigades Union have opposed many of the changes and have been involved in industrial action since the end of September.
