WORK on a safety scheme has got under way on roads in Cleckheaton.

The area affected is around Whitcliffe Mount Business and Enterprise College.

The roads affected are Turnsteads Avenue, Whitechapel Road and Whitcliffe Road.

The work has been welcomed by local Kirklees councillor Ann Raistrick.

She said: "This has been a long project but we are now in the final phase, which is great.

"Over the last year the council has been working closely with the school, its teachers, students and their parents to determine the changes that needed to be made to make the area safer.

"Residents and businesses have also been involved, as I have as a councillor and governor at the school.

"The measures that have been decided upon address those issues which people raised as concerns.

"I hope to see a marked improvement in the area once the work is complete."

The new scheme will see:

* A mini-roundabout at the junction of Turnsteads Avenue and West End

* Two zebra crossings. One will be on Whitcliffe Road and one on Turnsteads Avenue

* Three flat-top road humps. Two will be on Whitechapel Road and one on Turnsteads Avenue

* Improved street lighting

* New signs

* New road marking

The work will take about six weeks.
