A Salendine Nook High School pupil showed judges she is hot stuff in the kitchen.

Iman Dar beat off competition in the final round from seven other teenagers across West Yorkshire to win Kirklees College’s Young Chef of the Year competition.

They battled it out to create a show-stopping dessert in under two hours to impress the judges including top chefs Barrington Douglas and Richard Dennis from Discovery Bay Caribbean restaurant in Huddersfield and college principal Peter McCann.

Eventually they opted for Iman’s lemon pudding cake with summer fruits sauce. Runners-up were Alice Evans of Huddersfield Grammar who baked a mean, hot chocolate and salted caramel swiss roll with chocolate strawberry.

In third place was another Huddersfield Grammar student, Millie Donaldson, who impressed with her individual Bakewell cheesecakes with a sour cherry coulis.

Kirklees College curriculum team leader for hospitality and catering, Gary Schofield, said: “We were incredibly impressed with the talent and attitude of these young chefs. They all did exceptionally well and it was a pleasure to watch them at work.”

Originally 20 young people were selected to take part in two heats in the training kitchens at the college’s Huddersfield centre.

Finalists were: Alice Evans – Huddersfield Grammar; Millie Donaldson – Huddersfield Grammar; Ranjish Bhullar – Huddersfield Grammar; Iman Dar – Salendine Nook High School; Jasmin Eastwood – Salendine Nook High School; Manveer Bhullar – Colne Valley High School; Adam Hollings – Horbury Academy; Alice Lovett-Johnson – Ryburn Valley School, Sowerby Bridge.
